Using an expired LPG cylinder is a silent household hazard. Over time, the constant high pressure of the gas, combined with environmental moisture, weakens the cylinder walls. This can lead to microscopic cracks, valve failures, or even catastrophic explosions.

How to Find and Read the Expiration Date
Manufacturers stamp the expiration date directly onto the metal structure of the cylinder. For standard steel tanks, look at the inner side of the metallic plates (stays) that connect the top handle ring to the main body of the cylinder.
The expiration date is written in a simple code consisting of one letter followed by two numbers (e.g., B29 or D32). Here is how to decode it.
1. The Letter Represents the Quarter (Month)
- A: First Quarter (January to March)
- B: Second Quarter (April to June)
- C: Third Quarter (July to September)
- D: Fourth Quarter (October to December)
2. The Numbers Represent the Year
The two digits following the letter tell you the exact year the cylinder expires. For example, 28 means 2028, 30 means 2030, and 35 means 2035.
- If your tank is stamped A28, it expires between January and March of 2028.
- If your tank is stamped C31, it expires between July and September of 2031.
What Should You Do If Your Cylinder Is Expired?
If you check your tank and realize the date has already passed, do not panic, but take immediate action:
- Do Not Refill It: Reputable gas plants and authorized dealers will reject expired cylinders because they fail safety regulations. Never force a refill.
- Empty It Safely: Use up the remaining gas safely, keeping a close eye on it.
- Exchange or Dispose: Take the empty, expired tank to a certified LPG distributor or a Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) approved facility. They can safely dispose of it or refurbish it through official hydrostatic testing.
